The Young Lawyers Section is dedicated to serving the Greater Rochester community by volunteering, raising money for worthwhile causes and supporting Rochester Teen Court.
Recent Past Community Service Projects/Fundraisers:
- Tour de Cure –A bicycle ride and fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association.
June 1, 2013: The YLS team joined over 40,000 national riders to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. The Rochester area Tour de Cure is one of several events held in 40 states. Last year the Rochester community raised slightly less than $1,000,000.00.
- YLS Silent Auction – Benefit for the Rochester Teen Court - Raised more than $12,000 to support Rochester Teen Court.
June 18, 2013: 5th Annual YLS Silent Auction and gala to benefit Rochester Teen Court. 64 local businesses donated auction items and raised more than $12,000.00 for Rochester Teen Court in 2013. The 2013 Silent Auction guest speakers include former New York Court of Appeals Chief Judge Honorable Judith Kaye and New York Supreme Court Justice Honorable Frank Geraci.
- ROC the Day – Raised more than $2,000 to support the Volunteer Legal Services Project, Empire Justice Center, the Foundation of the Monroe County Bar and Legal Assistance of Western NY.
December, 2012: ROC the Day powered by the United Way, is a 24 hour donation blitz aimed to raise money for over 700 local non-profit organizations. This year the YLS raised more than $2,000 to support Volunteer Legal Services Project, Empire Justice Center, The Foundation of the Monroe County Bar Association and Legal Assistance of Western New York.
November, 2012: Founded in honor of Anthony Poselovich who died of a rare form of liver cancer the foundation provides assistances to families of children with cancer. The YLS is proud to support the Anthony Poselovich Foundation and raised nearly $100 and donated 30+ costumes at this year's YLS Halloween Happy Hour. (See pictures here)
September, 2012: The YLS race team participated in the annual Barktoberfest 5-mile run and 1.5 mile walk and a strong YLS fundraising campaign helped Lollypop Farm and the Humane Society of Greater Rochester to Raise over $110,000.00. (See pictures here)
- Rochester Teen Court – Helped 126 teenagers in 2012 avoid criminal convictions for non-violent crimes and violations while helping them curb the behavior that resulted in their arrests.
Ongoing: Entering its 15th year Rochester Teen Court is designed to divert non-violent youthful offenders from the criminal justice system, prevent them from incurring a criminal conviction, investigate the reasons behind their criminal behavior and provide them with peer-assigned rehabilitative activities to help them avoid recidivism. Rochester Teen Court is the primary volunteer program of the YLS. The YLS is the primary source of volunteers. Each year YLS attorneys serve as adjudicative restorative justice mediators and train teen attorneys to conduct adjudicative justice proceedings before Rochester City Court Justices and Teen Court youth jurors and peers. In 2012 the YLS helped 126 teenagers avoid criminal convictions for non-violent crimes and violations while helping them curb the behavior that resulted in their arrests.
