Annual Red Mass to be held Sept. 29 in Rochester
September 29
12:10 p.m.
Cathedral of the Sacred Heart
Rochester, NY
The Annual Red Mass for members of the legal profession will be held at 12:10 p.m., Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Rochester. The Most Reverend Salvatore R. Matano, Bishop of Rochester, will preside. All are welcome to attend. A reception sponsored by the St. Thomas More Lawyers Guild will follow the Mass.
The Red Mass, also called the Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, requests divine assistance on behalf of judges and lawyers and others associated with the legal community. Inaugurated in England in the 13th century at the time of King Edward II, the Red Mass was held at the opening of the Michaelmas term of the judicial calendar. The Red Mass was so named because the celbrant wore red vestments and members of the Lord High Justices and academic officials wore scarlet robes. The red vestments worn by the clergy represented the tongues of flame symbolizing the Holy Spirit.
